Nature & the Sublime exhibition opens Friday, August 12 at 7:30
The work in this exhibition is by students from the course of the same title. Although based on landscape and nature, this course examines the more abstract qualities of painting. Students experiment with the application of paint on a surface to create atmosphere, mood and emotion. Natural phenomena and weather are used for their metaphoric capacities. The act of painting becomes a way to connect the artist to the natural surrounding world. Exhibition continues to Wednesday, August 17 in the Slide Room Gallery located at the lower level of VISA.

Here are images from Xane St Phillip’s Painting: Mostly Black course taught in the Spring 2011 semester.

A one-day watercolour workshop where students learn to approach watercolour painting in a fun and non-intimidating way. The workshop introduces the concept of the doodle as an entry point to artmaking. In one exercise students used numbers as a way to create marks and designs.
